The three hard requirements have a common shape: a platform or a regulator needs to confirm that an entity exists, is legally constituted, and sits at the address it claims. Apple states that the business must be recognised as a legal entity, such as a corporation, limited partnership or limited liability company, to enter into the programme agreements. On 4 April 2022 the US federal government stopped using the DUNS Number and adopted the Unique Entity ID as the primary means of identifying entities registered for federal awards government-wide. All DUNS numbers were removed from SAM. Dun & Bradstreet's own current position matches this: a D-U-N-S Number is not required for US federal government contracts, though many other agencies, governments and companies around the world still use it.
The practical consequence for a business in Trivandrum is worth being blunt about. If someone is selling you a D-U-N-S Number on the basis that you need it to bid for US federal work, the reason they are giving you is four years out of date. The genuine reasons to get one are the app stores, the FDA and commercial onboarding, and those reasons are strong enough on their own.
If you do bid for US federal awards
You need the Unique Entity ID, obtained through registration on SAM.gov, and it does not replace a D-U-N-S Number for anything else. The two identifiers now serve entirely separate systems: one for US federal procurement, one for commercial and regulatory verification worldwide. Holding one says nothing about the other.

The first is a company submitting the name it trades under rather than the name on its Certificate of Incorporation, which passes at D&B and then fails at Apple, where trade names are explicitly not accepted. The second is a company already sitting in the D&B database from public data, applying afresh and creating a second record, so the platform verification finds two entities and trusts neither. Both are caught in an afternoon before submission.
How to get a D-U-N-S Number from Trivandrum
