About the Rent Receipt Generator

A rent receipt is a written acknowledgement that a landlord gives a tenant confirming that rent has been paid for a particular period. Salaried employees use rent receipts as proof to claim House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption, and tenants keep them as a record of payment. This free generator lets you create a clean, professional rent receipt in seconds, with the amount automatically written out in words.

What a rent receipt should include

Rent receipts and HRA exemption

Under Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act, salaried employees who receive HRA and live in rented accommodation can claim a tax exemption. Employers ask for rent receipts as supporting proof. Keeping monthly or quarterly receipts ready makes the HRA claim process smooth at the time of investment-proof submission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A rent receipt that records the tenant name, landlord name, rent amount, period and property address is accepted by most employers as proof for House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption under Section 10(13A). If your annual rent exceeds Rs. 1,00,000, your employer will also need the landlord PAN, which you can add in the form.

A revenue stamp of Re. 1 is generally affixed on receipts for cash rent payments above Rs. 5,000. Payments made by cheque, UPI or bank transfer do not require a revenue stamp. Tick the revenue stamp note in the form if you want a reminder printed on the receipt.

The landlord PAN becomes mandatory when the total rent you pay in a financial year is more than Rs. 1,00,000, as your employer reports it for your HRA exemption. For lower amounts it is optional.
