Four steps

How to find your HSN code

  1. Search your product. Type what you sell in plain words, like "basmati rice" or "cotton t-shirt", or any digits of the code you already know.
  2. Confirm the description. Open the code page and read the official tariff description, so the code genuinely matches your product and not just its name.
  3. Check the GST mapping. The page lists the GST schedule rows for the code with the CGST and SGST split, including slabs that depend on sale value or packing. Verify the current rate before you invoice.
  4. Use the right digits. Report 4 or 6 digits in GSTR-1 based on your turnover, and the full 8 digits on customs documents.

  • GST rate mapping: HSN to GST code and GST rate schedule mapping (as published 30.06.2017), Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (cbic-gst.gov.in).
  • Current rates: GST Council notifications, including the rate rationalization effective 22.09.2025, published on the CBIC tax information portal.

HSN code questions, answered

What is an HSN code?

An HSN code is a number from the Harmonized System of Nomenclature that classifies goods for tax and trade. The first 2 digits are the chapter, then the 4-digit heading, the 6-digit subheading and the full 8-digit Indian tariff item. GST invoices, returns and customs documents use these codes to identify what is being sold.

How many digits of the HSN code do I need for GST?

It depends on your aggregate turnover. Businesses with turnover up to Rs. 5 crore report 4-digit HSN codes on invoices and in GSTR-1, and businesses above Rs. 5 crore report 6 digits. Import and export documents always use the full 8-digit code.

How do I find the HSN code for my product?

Search by the product name or any part of the code above, or browse from a section down to the exact 8-digit item. Each code page shows the official tariff description and the GST schedule mapping, so you can confirm the fit before using it.

Where do I find the GST rate for an HSN code?

Open any HSN code page in this directory to see the GST rate rows mapped to it in the CBIC schedule, the CGST and SGST split, and a calculator for that rate. GST rates change through GST Council notifications, including the slab rationalization effective 22.09.2025, so verify the current rate on the CBIC portal before invoicing or filing.

What is the difference between HSN and SAC codes?

HSN codes classify goods, while SAC (Services Accounting Codes) classify services. If you supply goods you quote an HSN code, and if you supply services you quote a SAC code. Businesses that supply both use each type for the respective line items.

Is the HSN code the same in every country?

The first 6 digits are harmonized across all countries that use the WCO Harmonized System, so subheading 6109 10 means the same thing worldwide. Countries extend the code beyond 6 digits their own way; India uses 8-digit tariff items under the ITC-HS.
