Thiel Fellowship , $250K Grant for Young Founders Under 22
Equity-free Rs. 2.25 crore ($250,000) Thiel Fellowship for founders aged 22 or under who leave college to build over two years.
- Aimed at under-22 founders with bold ideas who are ready to walk away from a degree and build.
About this scheme
Aimed at people aged 22 or under, the Thiel Fellowship hands out $250,000 (roughly Rs. 2.25 crore) over two years so they can build a company, pursue scientific research, or chase a meaningful project rather than stay in a classroom. Peter Thiel launched it in 2011 through the Thiel Foundation, and it remains one of the rare global programmes willing to back people at the idea stage, well before incorporation or a shipped product.
The award is fully non-dilutive, $250,000 across two years, with the Foundation taking no stake. What fellows give up in return is college, dropping out or skipping it for the fellowship's run. The money comes with a network, too, opening doors to founders, investors, and scientists in Thiel's circle and warm introductions to angels, venture capitalists, and possible partners in Silicon Valley and elsewhere.
No sector is off-limits, and alumni have built across software, hardware, nonprofits, media, biotech, and climate. By 2026 the programme counted 271 fellows, with 26 unicorns among them. Eligibility is open worldwide, Indian founders included, provided they are 22 or under and hold no university degree; applications run year-round on a rolling basis at thielfellowship.org, are judged individually, and need neither a co-founder nor a team.
Who can apply
- Candidates must be no older than 22 when selected.
- They must hold no university degree, undergraduate or graduate.
- They must be prepared to leave or skip college for the fellowship's two years.
- Strong, concrete momentum toward a vision counts; a shipped product or registered company is not a prerequisite.
- Each application is judged on the individual, so applying solo is fine.
- Anyone in the world can apply, Indian founders among them.

Are founders from India eligible?
Yes. The fellowship is global, and an Indian founder who is 22 or under and holds no university degree can apply at thielfellowship.org.
Must I already have a company or product?
No, an incorporated company or finished product is not required, but you do need to show real, concrete progress toward your idea.
Will the Foundation take a stake in my venture?
No. The $250,000 is entirely non-dilutive, so no equity changes hands.
Can I apply without a co-founder?
Yes. Reviews are done at the individual level, so a solo application is fine.
When does the application window open and close?
There is no window. Applications are taken all year on a rolling basis.
