Somaiya Vidyavihar founded Research Innovation Incubation Design Lab (RIIDL) in 2010 on its Mumbai campus to push innovation and entrepreneurship. A Section 8 not-for-profit with more than 20,000 sq ft of space, it is backed by the Department of Science and Technology, BIRAC, and the Maharashtra State Innovation Society.
DST named it the National Award winner for Emerging Technology Business Incubator in 2020. The lab has incubated 160-plus startups, supported the creation of more than 600 jobs, and helped build a startup ecosystem valued above Rs. 1,226 crore, concentrating on healthcare, food, agritech, embedded electronics, and SMAC (social, mobile, analytics, and cloud); it also runs what it calls India's first community bio lab, a DIY biology lab created with the MIT Media Lab.
