NIC codes by business activity

Looking up the code for a specific business? Jump straight to a focused guide with the recommended NIC code and every relevant NIC-2025 and NIC-2008 code for that activity.

How NIC codes are structured

Every activity resolves from a broad sector down to one specific code. Here is the same branch at each level.

  1. ASectiona broad sector of the economy
  2. 01Divisiona 2-digit industry area
  3. 011Groupa 3-digit cluster of activities
  4. 0111Classthe 4-digit level used in most forms
  5. 01111Sub-classthe specific code you register with

Read it top to bottom

NIC-2008 codes end at 5 digits and NIC-2025 codes go to 6, but the path is always the same: section, division, group, class, then the sub-class. When a form asks for a "4-digit NIC code" it means the class level; when it asks for the full code it means the sub-class.

Trademark Registration

Trademarks use the NICE classification (Classes 1 to 45), not NIC codes. Your NIC activity helps identify which trademark classes fit your goods or services.

This directory reproduces the National Industrial Classification for reference. Titles, notes and codes are sourced from the MoSPI publications; the official gazette remains the authoritative source. IncorpX provides assistance for registrations that use these codes and does not issue the classification itself.

NIC codes, answered

What is a NIC code?

A NIC code is a number from the National Industrial Classification that identifies your business activity. Government systems use it to record what your business does. Codes are arranged in a hierarchy: a letter section, then 2-digit, 3-digit and 4-digit levels, down to the 5-digit (NIC-2008) or 6-digit (NIC-2025) sub-class you actually register with.

Which NIC version should I use, 2008 or 2025?

Use the version the form in front of you asks for. NIC-2008 is still accepted across many registrations, while NIC-2025 is the latest release and is being adopted progressively. Each class page shows the concordance between the two, so you can find the matching code either way.

Where do I need a NIC code?

NIC codes are used directly in Udyam (MSME) registration and in the industrial activity captured during company and LLP incorporation, and they inform DPIIT startup recognition. GST uses HSN and SAC codes and trademarks use NICE classes, where your NIC activity keeps descriptions consistent.

How many NIC codes can I choose?

You can select more than one. Udyam registration, for example, lets you list a NIC code for each activity you carry out and mark the main one. Choose the most specific sub-class that matches each activity.

How do I find the right NIC code for my business?

Search by activity name or code above, or browse from a section down to the exact sub-class. Read what each class includes and excludes to confirm the fit. If you are unsure, IncorpX provides assistance for selecting the correct codes for your registrations.

Can IncorpX help me register with the right NIC code?

Yes. IncorpX provides assistance for the registrations that use NIC codes, including Udyam, company and LLP incorporation and GST, and helps you identify the correct codes for your activities. Applications are always filed in your name with the respective authority.
